Constructed between 1858 and 1881, this structure was originally designed to house 250 patients but eventually served 2,400 mentally ill people. This building is also known to be the second largest in the world and follows a haphazard formation of rambling wings, set in a staggered formation, to ensure an abundance of sunlight and fresh air. Unfortunately, the structure was recently closed due to a deterioration of its structures and a change in the fundamental treatment of mental illness.
